After School Art Club

Tuesdays AND Fridays from 3:45 to 5:00pm

For the months of January, February, March, April, and May*

(*We do not meet when kids do not have school!)

The After School Art Club is designed for K through 5th graders and will combine a mixture of fun art and fine art.  Possible areas of “study” will be book making, art journaling, watercolor, illustration, assemblage, collage, jewelry making, stamp carving, and more.  Kids will be encouraged to follow their own creative desires and not necessarily a prescribed project.  I’m finding they are happiest when they can make what they want.  I’ll always have a project available but more often than not, children will follow their own path.  The cost is $15 per session.  This includes all materials and a simple snack.  Shadow box designed below by Rohen, age 11.

Printmaking and Paper Crafting

(February Break Art Camp For Kids)

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: February 19, 21, and 23

9:00am to 12:00pm

Open to ages 7 and up, we will have 3 mornings of creative bliss.  Our first goal will be to create a library of papers to use later.  We will begin camp by carving stamps from potatoes and other vegetables (yes, other vegetables!) We will also carve rubber stamps and will print our images on paper using paint and ink.  We will create gelatin prints and paste paper as well.   The next camp day we will use our papers!  We will create a small folded book, called a zine,  and use our own papers and stamps to adorn the pages.  Last, we will create pop up cards and origami.  Each student will get to take home a copy of everyone’s zine upon leaving camp.  Water and snack will be provided.  The cost for this camp is $95 and includes all materials.

ADULT CLASSES! (in no particular order!)

Creating Mixed Media Tarot Cards & Spirit Sticks at The Curtis Underground*

SATURDAY, March 10th, 10:00-4:00pm  $85

SUNDAY, March 11th, 11:30 to 2:30 $40  (optional)

Have you ever wanted to delve into the Tarot but didn’t know where to start?  Maybe you are a spiritualist or Tarot reader and want to make your own cards?  Or, you just plain love making art! Join Mandy Russell from The Painted Dog Studio and Kathryn Costa author of “The Mandala Guidebook” for a relaxing, spiritual, and creative experience.

The suit of Wands from the Tarot is the source of inspiration for our play this weekend as we create our own Tarot card, spirit stick, and landscape collages.

Colorful Painted Papers

Our creative play begins with the spontaneous process of making colorful painted papers by scraping, sponging, dripping, stamping, and using a Gelli plate. Each participant will create a spectrum of colored papers to use for the collage projects.

Spirit Sticks

Paint, markers, fabric, beads, feathers, and assorted embellishments transform a plain stick into a spirit stick that represents your life. As we decorate our sticks, we create a visual timeline that honors the blessings and challenges in our lives and the path that brought us to this moment. This is an empowering activity that celebrates our brave and beautiful spirits.

Wand Tarot Card

There are four suits in the Tarot and each represents key aspects of our lives. The Wands represent inspiration, intuition, creativity, and action. Cards in this suit symbolize our ideas, our core values, and our sense of purpose. Painted papers from the opening session will be used to create a collage depicting a Tarot card from the suit of Wands.

Landscape Collage

What is your passion? What excites you? What’s next for you? We’ll ponder these and other questions inspired by our work with the suit of Wands and our spirit sticks. We’ll create a landscape collage using our painted papers, printed papers, magazines, book images, and assorted ephemera.

All materials, supplies and tools provided. No art experience required.

**This WEEKEND ART RETREAT event will take place at Curtis Memorial Library‘s “Underground” art space located at 23 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, Maine**

In order to register, payment in full is expected.  You can pay using a credit card over the phone by calling 207.504.2438 or you can mail a check.  If you wish to mail a check, please email Mandy first at

Zendoodle Mondays

A different Zendoodle lesson every Monday from 11:00 to 12:00pm

Relax and learn several repetitive doodles as well as tricks to color or shade.  Each Monday will consist of several doodles and a different layout; sometimes we will create a scene like the cute snowman below and other times it will be more free form and random.  A cup of hot tea is always offered!  $10 and all supplies included.

Open Studio Mondays

Every Monday from 10:30 to 12:30pm

Bring what you’re working on or start something new.  Use my tools and materials if you’d like.  That’s right!  What’s mine is yours to use!  Paint, ink, even paper.  Have fun.  No instruction will be provided but I’ll always have tea to offer!  $10.

Sunday January 28th, 1:00-3:30pm

Learn how to whip up an adorable sweater gnome!  We will use the sewing machine and master of bit of hand stitching.  Choose from a variety of felted wool sweater pieces and customize your beard length and color.  Because winter isn’t over yet.  The cost for this workshop is $25.

The Wonders of Watercolor

Every-other-Thursday, 10:30am-12:30pm:

JANUARY 11 & 26

MARCH 8 & 22

This bi-monthly class is all about experimenting with watercolor!  We will paint a scene or image and  especially investigate color relationships and the role that value plays.  Students must bring with them cold press watercolor paper, a set of watercolors, and several watercolor brushes, especially one large round brush.  If you’re new and not sure of where to start, email me and I can help steer you in the right direction.  Bring a snack if you wish, and I always will have tea and coffee to offer!  The cost  for this class is $20 per session.

Mixed-Media Art Journaling

Every-other-Friday, 1:00 – 3:00pm:

JANUARY 5 & 19

MARCH 2 & 16

In these sessions, we will explore different techniques using a wide range of art supplies. We will write just a little bit but we will mainly explore page composition and general artsy mess making.  This is a no-mistakes approach!!  Each student should bring to class cold press watercolor paper or a mixed media art journal. $20 per session.

Customizable Long-Stitch Artists’ Book

SUNDAY February 11

BOOK ONLY:  11:00-2:30pm $40

PLUS ART JOURNALING: 2:30- 4:00pm Add $15 (optional)

Construct a book from cardboard.  Customize the size, shape, type of paper, and the cover.  (You do not have to use corrugated cardboard like I did!)  If you choose to use paper, you’re spine will not be as wide as mine.  You will learn how to measure for signatures, how to make a punching template, and will master the long stitch.  If you wish to fill your book with paper, you must bring your own paper, otherwise everything else is provided.  The first part of class is meant to show you how to construct the book from start to finish.  For the optional second part, I will demo my messy-painty-collagey-stitchy art journaling style, after which you will have a the rest of the time to try out.

Want to book an art or craft party?  We’d LOVE to help you out.  We hold parties for kids and adults at The Painted Dog and have even been known to travel for home parties as well. Email Mandy at with your idea and we can discuss!
