Circus Tents

I like the colorful, whimsical, wonky, and weirdness of circuses.  They invite that lifestyle of the gypsy sort.  Life on the road, performing, working with animals, costumes, etc…  Okay, so I’ve thought about running away to join the circus before.  I even used to be quite flexible.  But, alas, I am here safe and sound in middle-lower class America.  No jumping through flaming hoops while doing a split.

Being more serious, circus tents have great symmetry, and lend themselves to great patterning.  They are a residence for people and animals, quick to put up and take down.  You can’t see what’s going on inside them, so they’re a bit mysterious.  Here are a couple of recent tents:

Definitely looks like a bloody background (it's alcohol ink)

My favorite- the music is from an very old Mother Goose book

Persistence Pays Off!

I tend to be an obsessive person, but what I mostly obsess about these days is the designing of some new craft or art item.  Lately I’ve been working diligently on a new mixed media bracelet.  This not only involves trial and error stringing attempts, but also envisioning or brainstorming a technique. During this process I learn many new little hidden tips, secrets, and catchy swear word combinations; what not to do, what tool works best, etc., until my method becomes solid and efficient.  I’d like to think my persistence (obsessing) has paid off and I’m proud to present “Painted Blooms and Beads Bracelet”  (The name is subject to change):

Chunky Button Bracelets!!!

I taught a wonderfully fun class last night called “Chunky Button Bracelets.”  I love teaching this class.  I give the basic instruction and people chose their own beads and buttons.  Everyone comes up with their own unique piece of wearable art.  Here they are:

The flowers and stars are the underside of mother-of-pearl buttons

The solid red buttons came off of vintage costume button cards

Love that felt sandwich bead and the denim covered button!

The house button was from my grandmothers' craft collection

Lull-ness

So, I’ve had my first blogging lull over the last week or so.  I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with the juggling act of balancing housework, mothering, and artwork.  Unfortunately, it seems that balance is rarely achieved.  In fact, I’ve been dropping balls lately.   I decided to slow down a bit, read some good graphic novels, and watch my favorite funny people; Peter, Lois, Meg, and Chris of Family Guy.   By relaxing more in the evenings, I gave myself a “reboot,” and I let the messy house around me snowball.

Now I’m compensating.  Today, as I was cleaning our horrendously dirty shower, I thought to myself “my heart just isn’t in cleaning this thing.”  I know that I should just relish the chance to give my family a sanitary showering area but I admit, I’d rather someone else do it.   I made it through however and now, as I’m sure my readers are very concerned, my family could eat off the shower stall floor.

The dirty house is coming along, and just as I achieve clean interior surroundings, it will explode into a wide variety of messes.  Yet I’m working on a fabulous piece of art jewelry, working from that prototype from my last post.  I’m doing a bit of hand sewing (which is very relaxing) and painting on fabric (which I enjoy very much).

To close this odd rambling post, I will say that if I won the lottery, the first thing I’d do is hire a cleaning person.  The second thing I’d do is replace our smog-belching furnace.  The third thing I’d do is give the rest to a children’s charity.

Williams-Cone Holiday Craft Fair

The annual Williams-Cone Holiday Craft Fair occurs tomorrow from 9am-3pm.  There are many wonderful artisans selling their wares along with a kid-made art sale, and a soup and bake sale.

I’ve finished my new mixed-media bracelet prototype.  I am pleased with it overall but have a couple things in mind that I’ll tweak a bit on the next one.  Here it is:
